Wow, thanks for the very complete reply. Ive been using windows for years but Im getting to be half decent at command line stuff. I just wasnt sure if it was going to require compilation or somesuch, which is totally beyond me.
Looks like like Ill try the on-tablet flasher. Ill PM you my email now.

My god it worked! No problems anymore. I still need to check the dbus messages, but after the reboot it connected fine to my computer, so I flipped to host mode and it read my flash drive right off (even though it said 'USB Device Not Supported"). So it works.

The USB Device Not Supported message is normal. There's a whitelist specified in the kernel driver. If the device isn't listed in the whitelist, that message will appear. You can safely ignore it...
