(BTW, you need to have root access and xterm for this.)

For an explaintion of this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts#Ad_filtering

1. Download: http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.txt to /tmp
2. sudo cp /etc/hosts /etc/hosts~
3. sudo cat /media/mmc1/hosts.txt >> /etc/hosts
4. Done

It's not perfect but works well. IMO the correct way is to do this is to use the "URL Filter File=" setting in opera.ini but that seems to be borked. For more information about this see: http://www.opera.com/support/usingop...aini/index.dml

Bonne Chance.

I tried this a while back and was annoyed by the "Connection Refused" I kept getting whenever the browser tried to retrieve an ad and failed because it couldn't connect to 127.0.0.1.

Does this still occur?

You can also use PRIVOXY for this, it works very well on the 770
(see installation Howto in the Wiki)

gnuite: I've had one site warning. I'm going to switch the IPs to 0.0.0.0 and see if that works any better.

fpp: I'm going to give it a spin tonight. It looks great. How much memory does it use (since memory is always in short supply)? I can always run it on a spare host at the office. =) The benefit of the host list is it doesn't use a separate process. It's also very easy for web sites to get around. Thanks for the recommendation.

I don't think it hoards a lot f memory. I often run it locally on the 770 (when I'm browsing through BT+EDGE on the phone) and haven't noticed anything special compared to browsing without it on Wifi.

Ok, so I installed privoxy on my main machine (2G Athlon, 512M, Ubuntu, on the same C network) instead of the 770. Great program. Since I use my 770 95% of the time on the same network this works well.

Much better that the host file idea. Next step is to install prioxy directly on 770 sometime soon. Thanks for the recommendation.

Small update: I've been using Privoxy for a month now and am blown away. It's one great piece of software. Thanks for the recommendation.

I tried using 0.0.0.0 in the host file and it has the same "connection refused" problem.
