Carol Pope.
Grew up on her and other greats...
It was grand..
just as excellent as she ever was..
she's got a new album out ...
played a bit from it..
played some of her best tunes from back in the day too...
There are precious few artists whose work is relevant decades later..
or can use composition , good writing and vocals to create imagery in mid air like her..

Been a weird day out here at the edge of the world...
Been tryin' to keep busy and not think about it..
but I can't just ignore or pretend everything is grand out here...

I've lived out here for almost 20 years now..
Where I am...
(and I'm not trying to sound bleak here..this is just the way things are..)
Last winter we had no snow at all.
we always get a week or at least a month of snow.
We're a northern rainforest....
have been longer than people have been on this continent.
Up until the last 5-8 years our rain is supposed to start in the fall september-ish and finish may-june ...
This year ...we have had if memory serves...1 day of barely drizziling rain...since spring now?...
Today woke up and walked Eddie...forecast was yet another day of cloudless 33 degree celsius sun...
It looked like sunset outside...and there is no sun...over on the mainland and here on the island there are forest fires burning...not too unusual..I admit...but you can smell it in your home..outside...all I can smell is woodsmoke..my glasstop kitchen range is covered in ash from fires..far away....you can see it...

and it progressively has been getting worse

that fog isn't fog..that cloud cover in the sky isn't cloud cover.....there are even a few fires on the island south of me ...lotta beautiful land gone here...
visibility has decreased so much they are halting floatplane flights ..don't know about the bigger planes...
my lady just told me local flights are cancelled due to the fires..
and over in Sechelt they've lost a fire fighter to the forest fires...
read that it is so bad on the mainland ...residents are watching ash just fall from the sky like snowflakes...
hell the forecast says no rain for a lonnnngggg time to come either....it's just unnatural.
Sorry boys ...planet is changing ...last 10 years have been rough...but this...this is getting really bad now and I can't say it isn't just a rough patch..
maybe beating you to the apoca-punch on this one guys...
I was thinkin' 20 years and it would be time to move...but now I've revised that... 10 years here and then it'll be time to move further north...hope I don't have to move sooner....It's all beautiful out here...but I know I'll be missing this area where I live now...once it's time to move ....

I'm sure were going down that slope at the moment and extremes are even more extreme. We've gotten quite a bit of rain on the east coast. Usually that correlates with el nino. But when we're wet the west coast is dry.

Yup in a somewhat stable biosphere I'd agree..
they are calling our dry spell a drought out here now...
but we shouldn't be "dry" at all here...we're a rainforest...

It's 8am here and it isn't better it's worse...
Everything is covered... everywhere ...in fine ash...
air it is not safe to breathe right now..let alone be out in...
I'm not a freak about woodsmoke or anything..grew up on a farm..always had a woodstove..chopped wood all my life...camp all the time..love woodsmoke.....sting in the eyes...and all..it isn't a good time until you stink of it in fact...

But this ...this you can't breathe...you can't have an open window...you can't go out and do anything in...
All around ..this is disturbing...

Burning on Vancouver island?

We have a few fires here..
B.C. has about 87 of them going right now..
we are a little ahead of the yearly norm...
Alberta and Saskatchewan are also burning...
It isn't unusual or odd...always been fighting them.
Problem has always been that the conifers do their reproductive cycle "through" it getting tinder dry...then forest fires take huge sections (hectares) out...and the cones are prepped for the next cyclical generation of forest.
That is how it has always been in a proper climate..
But now...the moisture, snow and rainfall just isn't there in the proportions needed to keep the cycle stable...It's getting dryer and dryer year after year out in the west here...Whatever tree planting is being done...should be stopped...and leafy or rather deciduous trees should be planted to help retain more moisture from the air and provide a better trap for it.....it may help stave off the worst of the climate change effects..as well...
and decids don't go up in flames like a matchstick dipped in kerosene ...like pines and cedars...
I used to study horticulture amoungst other things when I was younger...
and I worked planting and tending trees in my youth for a few years .....great job...truly physically and spiritually fulfilling...
