SHR unstable is a "live" distro and is built from upstream continuosly, so the best way to follow the development is to read commit logs.
The important part is the isimodem support in the FSO middleware (git.freesmartphone.org/cornucopia/fsogsmd). As some developers got an N900 for free from Nokia I hope someone is working on that and will commit some code soon. In the meantime there is WIP to have HW support in fsodeviced.

P.s. instead of reflashing a new image every time, you may try opkg update, opkg upgrade

I installed the latest version last night.
got around the backlight issue (duh. set backlight to 100% in settings, anything less leaves it dark), however find that rebooting device into SHR brings up pin code request and nothing else. any clues or advise on best way to circumvent or resolve?

I don't remember very well, but if you tap on the top-center of the screen the "task manager" should appear (left arrow - X - right arrow). Am I wrong?

yeah mate, when the screen is there it does, however the only thing I get after rebooting is the pin request. tapping the screen anywhere doesn't bring the menu/arrows drop down.....
funny thing is, I don;t have a sim in. I've tried it with the sim in and tried both my sim lock pin and the default n900 pincode. no luck

Cornucopia:

Openembedded tree (guessing developing goes there until pushing upstream but not sure):
