I'm trying to watch an anime (full metal alchemist) on my phone but the mediaplayer can't open the files. In information it says that the file type is "matroska-video". On my PC I can watch this in the media player classic. I have extra decoders support, anything else that might help me read the files?

Thanks in advance

Even with extra decoders, the stock media player isn't that great. Use Mplayer or VLC instead. VLC even has hardware acceleration now.

I was not aware that VLC was available for maemo. I will certainly try it out, thank you!

I don't seem to find any of these in the application installer... When searching for Mplayer i only get Mplayer Movie player (command-line only). And VLC no hits except vlc-remote.

Mplayer is CLI-only, although there are some GUI frontends for it (like KMplayer). To install VLC you have to add a repo:

Code:
Catalog name: VLC
Web Address: http://download.videolan.org/pub/videolan/maemo/
Distribution: fremantle
Components: free

MKV's are playable, but the video file inside the MKV isn't playable due codec, profile or resolution.

Nowadays most anime is in 720P AVC video with AAC audio.
AVC* = no problem
AAC = no problem
720P = problem

(For all supported codecs: http://wiki.maemo.org/N900_Media_Support )

N900 can't play over its naitive resolution of 800x480 (Well 2 pixels above that would work too)

So the solution is:
Convert the MKV's to MKV's with a lower resolution
The optimal resolution to convert from 720P = 800x448

The only downside is, you'll lose the fancy .a-s-s subtitles but that something you'll have to accept..
(Or you'll need to extract the .a-s-s from the MKV, but I don't know if the N900 supports .a-s-s subtitles with "subtitle support". .srt works fine though)

Hope this helps!

Further info on encoding: http://wiki.maemo.org/Video_encoding

*AVC is usually no problem but In combination with H264 with an high profile(Most anime) it won't play, even in a lower resolution.
The N900 only supports the 3.0 Baseline profile
