Or you can use "file:///" as the URL in microb or other web-browser. You can probably also bookmark your favourite folders too.

so for the gif image to open in web browser to need to add a line in web browser one and delete gif association with image viewer.

vi /usr/share/applications/defaults.list
OR mentioned elsewhere that instead of always playing with root files; a user file would be a safer option...

A defaults.list file with even one line that you require located in /home/user/.local/share/applications/ should override that one line in /usr/share/applications/defaults.list.

Using this method you will find some weird behaviour. Using the stock file manager you will get the gif images opened by image viewer. But using CuteExplorer or FileBox you will get them opened by microb.

Well doesnt happens for me mine opens using microb from file manager.
Maybe because mine doesn't have default.list in
/home/user/.locale/share/applications/ to overide my list in root.

Btw, 'dbus-switchboard' (extras-devel) can be used to easily (re)assign file /protocol handlers.

I deinstalled dbus-switchboard some time ago for somewhat reason (cannot remember, something was not working or interfering or I was too dumb to use it).
