i found myself wondering if it was possible to hack in a launch/work like animation in the task switch area of the left side bar.

that is, when a program is launched, a placeholder button with a spinner is placed there until the first window of the program shows up.

and similarly, when a program is working on something, a spinner is placed on top of the icon...

i like load applet for that purpose. high CPU load = app loading or working. but what you're suggesting would look cooler and give you a bit more information, i guess.

I miss the animated hour glass used on other operating systems.
