me ma sent me this...got a chuckle out of it so I thought I'd pass it on. I think it is applicable no matter where a soul lives.

A cowboy named Bud was overseeing his herd in a remote mountainous pasture in Alberta when suddenly
a brand-new BMW advanced toward him out of a cloud of dust.

The driver, a young man in a Brioni® suit, Gucci® shoes, RayBan® sunglasses and YSL® tie,
leaned out the window and asked the cowboy,
"If I tell you exactly how many cows and calves you have in your herd, will you give me a calf?"

Bud looks at the man, who obviously is a yuppie, then looks at his peacefully grazing herd and calmly answers,
"Sure, why not?"

The yuppie parks his car, whips out his Dell® notebook computer, connects it to his Cingular RAZR V3® cell phone,
and surfs to a NASA page on the Internet, where he calls up a GPS satellite to get an exact fix on his location
which he then feeds to another NASA satellite that scans the area in an ultra-high-resolution photo.

The young man then opens the digital photo in Adobe Photoshop® and exports it to an image processing facility in Hamburg, Germany ...

Within seconds, he receives an email on his Palm Pilot® that the image has been processed and the data stored.
He then accesses an MS-SQL® database through an ODBC connected Excel®
spreadsheet with email on his Blackberry® and, after a few minutes, receives a response.

Finally, he prints out a full-color, 150-page report on his hi-tech, miniaturized HP LaserJet® printer, turns to the cowboy and says,
"You have exactly 1,586 cows and calves."

"That's right. Well, I guess you can take one of my calves," says Bud.

He watches the young man select one of the animals and looks on with amusement as the young man stuffs it into the trunk of his car.

Then Bud says to the young man, "Hey, if I can tell you exactly what your business is, will you give me back my calf?"

The young man thinks about it for a second and then says, "Okay, why not?"

"You're a Member of Parliament for the Canadian Government"” says Bud.

"Wow! That's correct," says the yuppie, "but how did you guess that?"

"No guessing required." answered the cowboy.
"You showed up here even though nobody called you; you want to get paid for an answer I already knew,
to a question I never asked."
"You used millions of dollars' worth of equipment trying to show me how much smarter than me you are;
and you don't know a thing about how working people make a living - or about cows, for that matter."
"This is a herd of sheep."

"Now give me back my dog."

AND THAT FOLKS, IN A NUTSHELL, IS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS TODAY.

aaargh!
ok, ok, ok,
my attempted distracting flim-flam-mery didn't work...
[sigh]

#2 - but only because of the (almost) goldilocks screen size of 4.3 in. (which is ....whaddayaknow... the dimensions of the screen size of the n8x0's ) which your 4.7 comes close to.
(which btw I think reeeeeaaaallllyyyy should be the size of our next open device the neo9000)

The Congress (2013)

I had no idea what to expect....and so had no preconceptions...
it definitely surprised me
Well done.
Like few... if any films ...I've seen.
What genre even to put it in...
Redemptive? Love Story? Horror? Sci-fi? Utopian? Dystopian? Just-around-the corner-technology film? called "Speculative Fiction" rather than Sci-fi....since it is closer to what could happen than Sci-fi.
Not saying what is in the film could happen...just that the overall prevading theme is our species problems and the answers we choose to solve them....for good and bad.

Real... live...flesh and blood actors and sets.... and animation...
Think of ..."Who framed roger rabbit", "Cool World", "Jacob's Ladder" and "Repo Men"...just to name a few...smooshed together into one movie and then take some LSD to watch it.... alot of LSD...
and those films don't compare.

The 1st half of the film creeps toward what we can do and are doing...for good and bad... technologically...
and the most definite inescapable fact there is no stopping it..
(as a consequence such film can't be called "A Cautionary Tale"..what use the caution ..eh? ......seems to be more and more prevalent in film...the aspect of fate dominating and free-will and choice departing...though this film has a strange mix, balance and juxtaposition with the undercurrent theme...similar in a way to that new movie "The Machine"...also well done.....hmm)
The most horrifying thing about the film ...I was surprised to realize ...was the ability to offer humanity the ultimate prize of "Free Choice"
to do..or be....or experience whatever...total nirvana...paradise...whatever desired.
I think that as humans the knowledge of the passage of time..and understanding our environs and seeing for good and bad right and wrong...is important...it makes us human...rather than animal..or something else completely different...others may view this film differently...
I figure myself to be a moderately creative and imaginative person...humbly said...(the actual truth of the matter being rather ...that my mind is quite quite active)...but this runs riot...
I never dreamt it to be a possible horror.

The 2nd half of the film definitely is the repercussion.

I won't even try to explain what it is specifically about....
How it made me feel in so many different ways...
One of those films I know I'll be watching it over and over.
It'll stay in my film vault.
Had to dig up this post I vaguely remembered;

I just watched "The Congress" and it is pretty much as you described. A kind of dystopia very much on our reach soon. It's described to be based on the Futurological Congress by Lem but I'd rather say it is heavily inspired by it but rewritten in major way, since the world really is similar but the story and the characters is way different.

Impressive and haunting movie, indeed!

To be fair, to make a film out of Futurological Cogress would be quite a challenge

True indeed, but have you seen The Congress by Ari Folman?
It comes out fairly close IMHO; of course it is not the same story but it captures the mood of the book really well.

No, I have not. With two little kids, I have seen Barbie Mariposa about 20 times though and when I get to the cinema, it's always to see a cartoon. I have not seen a grown-up movie in months!

Feel for you pichlo...
knowing every line from the barbie movies I think is absolutely fabulous. It keeps the ugly grit at bay. My lovely lady likes her film no grittier than say...humphrey bogart ... and I love her for it. Love film noir. I get my future-fix when she's not around. I like the uncertainty now and again...love the cult classics...etc.
And yeah it is a pretty well done film eh? haunting ...yea.
Chilling I think because I see such a possible future AS a possible future.
To steer such massive numbers of human beings as our species now has...without destroying ourselves...allowing everyone the equality and standard of living everyone wishes with diminishing planetary resource base...and NOT have individuals, communities, interest groups, cultures, nations or regions rebel ...
as the days, months and years tick by it is going to become increasingly challenging and it is going to become an increasingly desperate situation for us without a doubt.

Another film I think I mentioned that just hits the scientific buttons of the various A.I. conundrums... and fairly well is... "the machine"
I also just watched the very well done "Automata" with Antonio Banderas and the guy...the lead male from the cult classic from the 80's "Hardware" (can't remember his name at the mo.) (Hardware btw is as classic as they come.Adrian Brody, Iggy Pop is the radio d.j. "Angry Bob" ...the industrial metal group Ministry is played and has vids on tv's throughout the film...as well...Sid Vicious has a tune or two in it and ...oh yea...Lenny from the group Motorhead plays a water taxi driver ...oh yea ..great movie...anyway you guys should see it...back to "Automata"... ) and a slew of cameos by other names. Antonio does good. The film is well done. Liked it. Liked it alot.
Also saw "the Anomaly" ...not bad...it was ok-ish. Wouldn't say it was a keeper really though.
Also I'm curious how the hugh jackman "Chappie" will measure up. I'll check it out when it is released and see.
