Hey all,

I live in USA and bought a $200 "brand new" nokia n900 from "ittargets" shippied from China. It seems new, but I have a foreign keyboard. Worst of all, the arrows have been compromised on this layout

This is the layout I used to have (on my old device) and that I think I want: http://nokiaexperts.com/articleimage...rBoxN90009.jpg

So, am I SOL? Is it hard to replace the key pads? And reassign the keys?

Also, is it still difficult to update the firmware to 1.3? I always had a really hard time doing it. I've just found this:

It's an italian layout and it's easy to replace.
More difficult is to find a good quality replacement.

If you know your keys (english layout) by heart, just go to system settings, text input and set the keyboard layout to english.
This is what I do sometimes when I want to use arrows in all four directions without the need to push two button to go up/down.
If you cannot remember english layout without looking at the buttons, then set the keyboard layout in settings to italian and live with that layout.

Get a proper keymat!
It requires a little bit searching, but some online shops in the US and UK still have spare keymats.

I think back then it took me one week until I couldn't stand the crippled DE keymat anymore and went to the next Nokia shop to have it replaced.

There's nothing wrong with that kbd. The Spanish one is pretty much the same layout. Never experienced any shortages typing/editing/copy-pasting texts.
BTW, we need a first-person review/hands-on of the "brand new" N900 from China. To start with, I have a question: Where was it made as shown on the inner sticker?

As peterleinchen and xanders said. I have one N900 with a Nordic keyboard (Norwegian, Dutch or Danish, can't remember which) and switching between that and an English layout is quite intuitive. Shift+cursor keys for text selection is a bit trickier but that's about it.
