When I install an app or game from Store, the icon does show on my homescreen and everything is O.K. While if I install a deb app/game from non-store sources the app's icon does not show on the Homescreen? Does anyone know the cause or solution for this?

I was thinking of chmod the applications or icons folder or something, I can't remember the command... Sorry. Try looking around.

first step would be to see whether the .desktop files are created or not...

I am not quite sure I follow the OP. Do you mean, an app X from the repos installs fine, with icons and all, but app Y from an alternative source does not? Check app Y then!

I have never noticed any difference between installing an app directly from the repos and downloading it and installing it offline. I sometimes did the latter at work (no WiFi). That's on an N900 though, I do not have an n9.

It works fine on the n9 too but the OP has a habit of producing the unusual

No, no. That command should already be done automatically with installing the app. But I know what happened, my app that I am working on seemed to have a bug messing up all of the .dekstop files in my system. Lucky me, I had prepared a backup just 2 days ago when my N9 was in perfect condition I restored and everything went back fine, my application's commands were fixed and hopefully I won't have that issue again.
