I really like everything it can do on the 770 but my god its so slow. Startup is slow, applications load very slowly, web browser is slower.. etc etc

Why should I keep it and how can I speed it up???

Well first of all, on all IT's the boot up takes about 40-45 seconds, but I'm not sure what you mean by slow. When I had a 770 running on OS2007 it was slow, but that was kind of expected, considering the processor is really slow, half of what the N800 and N810 run at.

I meant that after it booted it was really slow however after a few boots that seems to be gone. Web browser was set to opera immediately for speed and rss auto update was disable. I tried using the linked post but when I entered what he said to in xterm it said "Enable RD mode if you want to break your device."

you have to be root on your device.
just install the package "becomeroot". I don't know any disadvantages to enable the rd mode.
