https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Save_Wi...idual_Comments

take a few minutes and express your views on the fcc website

if it passes this lockdown has the potential to seriously disrupt a lot of stuff and restricting freedom severly.

though lockdowns are acceptable to some extent as needed but this is extreme.

Take Action Now!

The FCC is asking for comments on this proposal. The most
important thing you can do is comment on the FCC's proposal and
tell them you want to be able to control your computing devices.
Will you do this?
Comment deadline extended to October 9.

I read through the FCC proposal and it indeed looks like some changes are to be made to the licencing modes, but AFAIU it just boils down to the fact that you'd need to relicense a transmitter device if you modify the SW.
It does not require manufacturer to lockdown the device, it just makes it illegal for users to modify it.

Of course manufacturers might choose to lock devices for modifications, but it seems not to be a requirement.

Please correct me if I understood this wrong.

well my english may be off but as i understood they want modules to be bullet proof i.e non modifyable frimware embedded in a rom
later when i read this i belive i got i right

19:57 <DocScrutinizer05> to perform that sort of checks and
"security" measures, you'd need more firmware on the chip for the
checks than for the WLAN, so that defeats the whole point of
uploading firmware rather than have it on board in a ROM

some more of it ...
....19:50 <edwin> would this cause trouble for neo900 in the us, or is
the isolation of the gemalto chip enough to meet the crazy fcc
demands?
19:51 <DocScrutinizer05> err, gemalto vs wifi?
19:52 <edwin> ah sorry, meant the wlan chip
19:54 <edwin> does that chip perform any signature checks on the
firmware blob, or it'll accept modified firmware blobs too?
19:55 <DocScrutinizer05> honestly I don't know for sure, but if I
had to guess I'd say "signature? what's signature?"
19:56 <edwin> some form of cryptographic signature
19:57 <DocScrutinizer05> to perform that sort of checks and
"security" measures, you'd need more firmware on the chip for the
checks than for the WLAN, so that defeats the whole point of
uploading firmware rather than have it on board in a ROM
19:57 <DocScrutinizer05> the idea behind all that was "do it cheap
and simple"
19:58 <DocScrutinizer05> btw recentöly we got issues with the
designated wg 7351 WLAN module. MOQ:2000, lead-time: 20 weeks
:-(
19:59 <DocScrutinizer05> We might need to change to another
model that's less mistreated by the manufacturers
20:01 <edwin> I don't live in the US so I haven't followed this news
very closely, but probably worth keeping an eye what openwrt and
others will do about it: http://wiki.prplfoundation.org/wiki/
Complying_with_FCC_rules_on_Wifi
https://libreplanet.org/wiki/Save_WiFi. looks like its still just a
proposal and not a law yet
20:04 <DocScrutinizer05> it's a very poorly thought law proposal,
that basically can't work in RL
20:05 <edwin> as if the unmodifiable firmware will now suddenly
become bug-free
20:05 <DocScrutinizer05> as if the firmware was unmodifiable on
any recent device (except some android phones and iPhone)
20:06 <edwin> yeah I doubt any company would want to recall all
their devices just to make it compliant with this new law
20:06 <DocScrutinizer05> also aiui this applies only to the RADIO
firmware itself. Irrelevant for the linux running on the router
20:07 <DocScrutinizer05> also funny: this only applies to 5GHz
WLAN .....

from upstream i.e continued discussions on irc same topic more info/corrections

14:30 <wpwrak> the next best thing to having a vogon battle
fleet appear out of hyperspace right next to earth ...
14:32 <DocScrutinizer05> you might start to wonder if that's
been a genuine FCC concern or actually it been NSA asking
FCC to do something about firmware they can't hide their
backdoors in
14:32 <DocScrutinizer05> also note this seems to be ALREADY
IN EFFECT in Europe
14:32 <DocScrutinizer05> :-o
14:33 <wpwrak> (eu) as far as i can tell, approved but not yet in
effect. not sure if it can still be averted, though.
15:39 <DocScrutinizer05> ((approved but not yet in effect)) prolly
right - and we need to go really bold to stop that nonsense. It will
kill Neo900 as well as e.g. AVM (FritzBox) and a *lot* of other
projects/companies

god knows whats next

I'm not sure why the FCC would listen to non-US voices but in any case surely this only effects US products? My routers are all German.

doesn't matter what country you are from..

[I do hope it won't have immediate reper. on Canadians here....s'all I can hope for if worse comes to worse...]
