Incidentally, how do you pronounce "eid"?

As a Bloody Foreigner™ with a background in a language where every letter is pronounced as it is written, I have always subconsciously pronounced "eid" as it was written - how the native English speakers would pronounce the English word "aid". So I was confused this morning when someone (a native English speaker) was talking about "eed" this and "eed" that.

Please excuse my ignorance. Unfortunately, Wikipedia did not help in this case.

In Persian, we pronounce it just like how 'aid' is pronounced in English. But I'm not sure about Arabic, it is probably pronounced like "eat" (except using 'd' instead of 't').

I had several Iranian lads in my year at secondary school and they used to giggle like little girls whenever the teacher asked a pupil to read for the class
