I run Windows 7 under VirtualBox. To make Windows 7 detect my N9, I had to enable both the USB Controller and the USB 2.0 (EHCI) Controller in the VirtualBox settings for the VM. I don't think I did anything else. The key was enabling USB 2.0.

Phone is now with Nokia for repair/replacement!
