Hello, on your first question you have to install an application call configuration editor (g-config), after installing open the application and look for the apps folder, then look for the modest folder after this check the fetch_the_external_image on the right side, after that close the g-config application an test your email, if everything is ok you will see your emails with images.

1 why don't any images ever load in the messages?
2 where is the default folder that it downloads messages to? is it possible to change it?
