I live in a bad signal area. I'm on 3ireland. They recently bought o2. 3 have 2g and o2 have 2.5g. 2g is stronger but now I occasionally get 2.5g showing up. I know I can force 3g but the signal is so weak. If I can use 2.5g/EDGE, that would be EPIC. n900 btw

This is default functionality. You don't even need any widgets/extra applications.
Settings > Connectivity > Phone, and then select 2G only as needed.

Thanks guys but no. I know I can switch between gsm and 3g but I want to force 2.5g instead of 2g. Both come under gsm.

Then no, this is not possible afaik. the modem will automatically switch between these two modes by itself.
