I had problem with Knots after i updated the OS and VLC... The best way i got it working again was to create a VM (VirtualBOX) and install it from the. and it even works better than it use to work on my server....

wow. I can't believe what I'm doing on my N900 right now. You sir are the man. This is by far the most I've been surprised in a while.

Does anyone know what the minimal sys-requirements are for the server part? I have knots2 running on my laptop and my gf´s macbook, but would like to use an older P4 with 1gig of ram, to be the server. it works but playback on the n900 is choppy, to say the least. Any suggestions?

Depends on material you are transcoding on fly e.g. transcoding HD material is always more resource hungrier than transcoding non hd to n900. Take a look this thread for settings to change it not so cpu heavy (of course quality will be not so good). IIRC there might be some guides in maemo.org wiki knots page.
