I see it like this:

Android is the Open Source alternative to Windows Mobile, a generic OS you can just slap on any device for a decent UI and many applications. Symbian ranges in this class as well.

Maemo is (going to be) the Open Source alternative to the iPhone OS or Web OS, a system that is highly tailored towards a specific range of high-end devices. It may be less ubiquitous (now and in the future), but is more likely to provide a pleasant and unique user experience.

Dunno. I've got the G1 and N800. Both run linux. Both have root access. One has a keyboard. The other one doesn't. One does things better than the other and vice versa. So, I see the G1 for more than the Android OS.

Just a thought as I'm on the N97 writing this, I think that the next tablet will be a considerable step up in terms of quality. The difference between this and the n810 next to me right now is pretty amazing. And I'm more convinced that this was a hardware reference design for a maemo device more than a s60 one. Some of the features are just too tablet-like.

The n97 and n900 will be a tough compairson that will be very interesting.

From a hardware perspective, its like two different companies made them. The feel of the slider and even the keyboard are better. The n810 has better travel with the keys but because its a bigger device, there'smmore finger stretching. The browser is much improved and if not for a few silly decsions with ui, it would be a lot better. Lastly, battery life is pretty sick on the n97. This thing lasts a long time.

I'll have to hold out a bit longer for more indepth compairsons since i've got other phones i'm compairing this to and i don't yet have an n97 of my own. But this is indeed encouraging both for future tablets and nokia devices in general.

I terms of hack-ability it seems like the ranking is

Nokia Maemo(with slimmed down X.org), Pre (directfb - framebuffer driver), Android (java rendering), Apple (I don't know about Symbian).

I have to hand it to Palm - their approach of porting webkit to run in directfb is a nice Idea.

Personally I think the future of app development on these phones is simply to use HTML 5

This Android HTC Magic is interested to be compared with the Android device Motorola Cliq. The same processor/memory?
