I assume this is running with the laptop dock, though I could be wrong -- there is no mention of VNC. Either way, it's a very neat project!

No, no, I'm not! I use this forum as somewhat of a blogging outlet to post information that I find interesting and to extend the conversation.

In this case, I am really interested in Ubuntu on a mobile phone, as the implications are somewhat large.

The Atrix 4G has a laptop-dock, when coupled with Ubuntu becomes a laptop. Now, it may not be able to handle complex tasks, but it should be capable of simple productivity, which is very cool.

Mobile SoC devices will soon meet entry-level netbooks in terms of performance, which has very interesting implications!

I just got a chance to see the Atrix 4G laptop dock. What an attractive package! The laptop dock is so thin, that it looks like it would make a fantastic travel companion for some serious productivity.

Here's what I would do to improve it:
1) Make the experience far better, with a scaled up Android, rather than a separate 'gimped' shell. This would keep file management, app selection, speed, and system updates far easier. If users want firefox or other linux apps, why not use the NDK to port it to Android with a simple X client/wrapper?

2) Move the 'dock' from the back of the device to the trackpad region . The phone is essentially a large touch screen, so why not make it the touchpad of the device? In this way, the touchpad could display context specific functionality for certain apps -- the visual touchpad. Also, I'm afraid someone will steal my phone if its out of reach and run off with it.

3) Include a backlit keyboard. I mean, seriously, the dock is basically just a screen and a battery. This shouldn't be hard nor that expensive to implement.

4) Lower the price. Since the laptop dock is simple in terms of its components, the price should be far lower than it is. The price is ridiculous.

5) Expand the line to include a tablet dock. Why buy a separate phone/tablet when you can have both is a relatively small package? The key here is to make the dock attractive and sturdy.

It's a very attractive idea, though the implementation needs some work. I hope that this experiment is further explored, though I have a feeling it will not perform as expected and be dropped.

When Atrix is out , I am very excited with it. However, when I know the truth of Motorola firmware and their update policy. I must say , I am luck that I didn't got Atrix yet.

Because Motorola Android system is so stupid that it can't disable haptic feedback.

May there have a lot of people like haptic feedback , but there also have many people hate it. Due to Motorola's bug , you have no choose. And they don't have plan to fix the problem.

wow! I turn haptic off, I don't *hate* it but I don't like it, I find it somewhat irritating and thus pointless, and I imagine it's a power drain too.

guys, so finally, is the verdict it is good?

"raw power." was used for N900 and it turned out be not so good for end users

Atrix is now released here in Australia but by Telstra on an expensive contract. There is no 4G, only Telstra's "Next-G" which is like 3.6G which is decent.

I don't see the point in having a Tablet-dock, a netbook+smartphone combo seems to suffice. I also thought about having the keyboard backlight and having the phone double as the touchpad. CC, great minds think alike

"raw power" has nothing to do with it. Nokia dropped the ball, nothing more. Saying that giving "raw power" to end-users is bad for them is to play into the silly lies of fans of DRM and lockdown.

Pls any one could help me how to downgrade the os version. Currently i m using atrix and yesterday i upgraded my android to 2.3 gingerbread ( in order to use skype on it) but it seems to me after updating the phone i it has created pain in my arse. Previously i was able to use google talk on froyo however now even google talk have stopped working. Actually i am used to skype so as a solution a friend told me to update the android version to get it work as his 4g version is capable to run skype. Well this seems that i have completely messed up with the stable version of my phone's os after upgrading which i shouldn't have done.

Also i dont understand his atrix 4g can run skype but why dont mine. His phone came with built in gingerbread version but it doesn't matters whether the phone comes with built in os version or else the availability of os upgrade for the phone wont be important if every upgrade would have to cause such problems. Even i am facing problems with wireless it keeps scanning without connecting and after upgrading the phone i have lost 6Gb free space. I dont understand what is wrong with the phone and the phone surface catches heat soo quickly which i haven't experienced before since i bought the phone.

Moreover many of the apps keeps running in the background those which i hardly use. I am unsure is it 2.3 gingerbread upgrade which have caused this problem or is there something wrong with my phone. Will reseting the phone solves the problem with out having to lose any data (as i have never resseted a phone b4) or is there any process through which will be able to downgrade the version with out any hassle.
