There's no information anywhere in there about the nature of the OS. Is it open source?

It says "Open platform Linux OS (community growth, application development and a high level of customization)".

Wow. Deeda looks like it could be really nice. And it has a lot of features Nokia should pay attention to:


1) low pixel front facing conference/chat cam AND high pixel back facing picture camera

2) a device that you can hook up to an external display (the UWI is an incredibly great idea; it just needs to make sure the DVI interface supports DVI-A, and then it needs to add an HDMI connector)

3) the mid-range has bluetooth and wifi, the high end adds GSM ... so those who don't want a WWAN radio in their device can do without it, and those who want that can buy a device with it.

4) the desktop app looks interesting ... I'm not sure of the extent of the deeda desktop, but as I've said for a while, Nokia needs a sync application so that you can backup data to your desktop computer (windows, mac, or linux), and synchronize contacts, calendar, todo, and bookmarks to various other applications (at least google's apps, but preferably also apple's applications, mozilla apps, and I'd like to see Oracle Calendar as well ... maybe CommuniGate Pro too)

I sort of like the blank slate design, but only if you've really got a true finger capable interface. Right now, you really need the dpad for some things on Maemo (IMO). But a Deeda Pi, with a slide-out keyboard (instead of an attachable bluetooth keyboard, as they propose), might be a nice design. Though, if you go with the attachable keyboard, rather than have it be the 2 they show, I'd like to see one that has a format similar to their joystick -- with split qwerty keys on each side (so it turns out sort of like a wibrain or tiny pepperpad ... or the old Nokia 3300).

I could also just see the Deeda as a companion to a Nokia NIT. Get the Pi, and use it as your tethering device for your N810? It looks like the Pi will work with T-mobile, so you'll have good data plans (and supposedly T-mobile is going 3g by the end of the year). I could get behind that.

For how I use my N800, my NIT is more of a pocket workstation than a media player. I could easily see having a WiMAX NIT and a Deeda Pi, and using NIT as a workstation, and the Pi as a media player... and then using the NIT for direct connection to the WiMAX network and the Pi for direct connection to the HSUPDA network ... each one tethering the other, as necessary.


Hm.. that might be an interesting TLA for the N8x0's:

PWS (Pocket WorkStation), in contrast to PMP.

Any word on if there has actually been any further development for these things? I've looked around on google, and checked their blog, but it doesn't appear as if there's been any news or updates to the thing since late November. If the chance that this stuff ends up being vaporware is high, I'll just spend my money on an N800...
