Anyone any pointers on how I could actually ping something from the command prompt? Seems a bit of a over sight requiring root to ping an IP

I installed the 'becomeroot' application. With that application installed, you can then type:
sudo gainroot
in Xterm to get a root prompt from which you can ping to your heart's content!
