N800 - OS2008

I'm having two problems - I'm not sure if they are related or not.

The main problem is my Application manager. App manager is not showing anything - (no applications installed.) So I want to delete my repositories but I can't get into it as I keep getting "operation already in progress." I get this no matter what feature I try to choose including the log. I have root access and apt-get update seems to work. What do I do to resurrect my App Manager?

Second problem - also associated with the App manager is if I try to install Skype my App Manager starts doing the 'operation failed' thing. Not sure what is up with Skype but I would love to be able to use it with this unit. I have to reflash to get App manager working again - I've done this twice - so now I will not try Skype until I get some idea how to fix this.

Anyone have any help on the first problem - I am still having to reflash often as the Application Manager keeps breaking and going to "operation already in progress." When this happens, there is nothing I can do - it is completely locked. I do have root access - can anyone tell me something to try to fix this?

Update: When I run apt-get update, this is what I get. Does this tell me anything?

Sounds like either a full disk or corruption. I'd try, as root, deleting any files that list as "Problem opening" in apt-get update. Application Manager does -not- handle errors gracefully, even if they're harmless: this error sounds pretty harmful, actually

This is persisting through multiple, full, reflashes? Are you restoring a backup after the flash?

Yes - multiple reflashes and no, I am not restoring any backup - I never get enough installed to actually make it worth doing a backup.

I get various error messages - but all seem to involve this part:

E: Read error - read (5 Input/output error)

It will happen every time I try to install Skype and will also happen sporadically on several other apps I try install. I can only install 2 or maybe 3 apps from the main repos before the App Manager fails to either Operation Failed or Operation Already in Progress. After that there is nothing I can do - it is broken and the only way I get it going again is to reflash.

Should I be returning the unit as 'broken' or is there something else I should look to do?

If you're getting this many read errors on a clean reflash, I can't imagine it's anything but a hardware failure: if you can return it as defective, I'd go for it.

So I just got off the line with Nokia 'level 2' tech help. They cannot tell me how to fix this nor will they do anything about it. They say that if Skype is causing the problem then it is Skype's issue not theirs. It doesn't matter that Skype installs with a single button push just fine for hundreds of their other customers ... the problem is Skype not the Nokia. Logical? Not to me.

Now, if I want them to reflash the device for me (4 to 6 weeks) then I can send it in to them... I guess the 20 or 30 reflashes that I've done are not good enough.

Huh?!? This is how a major manufacturer deals with problems with their product?

Thank goodness I purchased it from TigerDirect.ca. I called them and they gave me an RA number right over the phone - all I have to do is send it back for credit. Thank goodness somebody is standing behind this product.

I have the exact problem after Application Manager crashed during an installation. I can still install files fine, but I can't change the settings on it. On a side note, my Browser crashed during the installation also and was acting up, not downloading files and I was able to fix it by deleting the .mozilla from /home/user.

Hmmmm..... I just did aplication updates and now app manager now shows "no applications installed" when I tap show installed apps. Some thing's not good and I suspect it is not hardware related.

Ok - Deleted all but the nokia repositories and the app list came back. Whew.

I returned the N800 that was not working and received my new N800 today. I fired it up and tada - everything works!!! First try. Skype is working - the app manager is working fine and I am happy. I am disappointed that Nokia tried to shuffle the problem off onto '3rd party applications.' It really left me with a bad taste in my mouth for Nokia and I am a faithful Nokia customer - 3 phones in the past 3 years. I think after reading ALL the problems that people are having that there is a hardware problem with these devices. It just does not make sense that some people use these devices without a single problem and others (like me) have nothing but problems. Hopefully Nokia decides to take all these problems seriously and gets these units working properly because the concept is great!
