I am new to Linux and glad I can ask really "beginning" questions here.

I can put a "-help" after each command to see its syntax. However , it doesn't give me an explanation of what each option means. Is there a way to get the explanation in xterm? Or do I have to refer to some web pages for the explanation and usage of each command?

Usually you can look it up with man <command> put the tablet do not include manpages to save space, so just look it up on Google (wikipedia has decent coverage of most *nix commands, and there are html manpages available pretty much everywhere.

Also many of the built-in commands, are provided by busybox. You might want to head here and save that page for reference.

I looked at your link and did not see one of my faves listed - whereis . What would you recommend as the easiest way to get whereis to run on my n810?

I went to tldp and downloaded many of the how-tos (they are available in pdf and other formats). I keep them on my n810 for quick ref.

@stevecrye: If you really can't live without it, I would either try to compile it in scratchbox and just copy the binary over, or just grab the debian package for util-linux and extract and copy over just whereis. However, given that we don't have man pages or source for the most part, I would suggest you give which a try. It's also much faster.
