all recent versions of mplayer should play a .flv file, provided it uses standard encodings inside.

As a simple explanation, it should work.

As a more complicated explanation .flv isn't a format, it's what's called a "media container" As such, it contains two data streams, a video and an audio stream. These streams can be in multiple different formats and combinations so there's a chance that one of those combinations is not supported by mplayer.

you should check this version made by bundyo (using patches from mplayer rc1 we are all using - credits to Sergio)

this mplayer rc2 AFAIK works best

mine (OS2008 diablo) won't play them

I think I'm using the standard from the repo aand it plays .flv just fine. Is there a benefit of going to RC2?
