Ubuntu help's RSA Key-Based SSH Logins is what you're looking for
Then you use (g)rsync + SSH.

When I upgraded to Diablo I lost my host key.
In trying to find a decent explanation on how to redo the key I could not find the simple instructions I used before.
Does anyone have a good simple link on how to set up the key pairing and rsync?
All the threads here jump around and I could not find anything in the wiki.
