is there one? what i'm looking for is these:

• has an icon on the top toolbar that shows status, and from where you can change it,
• lets you view all of the status(sometimes they're long)
• isk able to make noises whenn a mesage arrives
• possibly be able to make insternet calls using gtalk/SIP and be bale to use the webcam
• lets you modify your own statuses

SIP calls can be made with the builtin 'internet call' application.

i do actually sue pidgin, but it can't make internet calls.. also, it glitches for me a lot. otherwise its not that bad.

what i'm looking for is a hybrid between pidgin or soekthing and the default internet calls application

I'm not getting it: Isn't almost all of this covered by the built in IM client?

I don't know exactly what you mean by "lets you view all of the status(sometimes they're long)", but if my interpretation is correct, that's where it doesn't do what you want: You don't see the exact status message of a buddy, only a symbol for on/off/busy.

But most of the other requirements: yes. (Oh, your own status messages: works somehow. You can give status messages for "away", but AFAIK cannot extend your online status with status messages manually.)

no, i actually do need the exact message of the buddy.. and your own status problem. can't change the availible status.

also, there isnt a way to make it ALWAYS show me only the people online, not eveyrone. its annoying..

There's probably not a lot you can do about the status messages. (I'm pretty certain you could set them, doesn't Vagalume do it when playing music? But there's no user interface for it in the chat client...)

About showing the people who are online:
There's an option for that in the contacts application IIRC (I'm at the office and don't have the N800 with me).

Anyway, if editing and seeing status messages is so important for you, then of course it's not for you.

Pidgin, AFAIK, doesn't support the VoIP-part, so that's no good either.

Thinking of it... I don't even know an application on the desktop that meets your requirements.

With the built in Chat app, you can specify the program to only show online contacts. My list of contacts is also organized by status, so at the top of the list is all the contacts listed with the green/active icon. All contacts listed as away have a yellow icon, and then everyone below that with no icon aren't connected. There might be a red icon too, I can't remember at the moment.

I haven't used the Internet Call feature on the tablet yet, so I can't help you there. But the built IM does play souds when a new message is received, and it activates a blue flashing LED as well for a visible alert.

well, my question is sort of on the line of hijacking the thread, but I think it'd be pointless to create a new one for that.
I'm very new to the Tablets, but what are the advantages of running Pidgin if I could add support for protocols like ICQ, MSN and Yahoo Messengers to the built-in client (and thanks to tso for pointing me in the right direction).
What else Pidgin can do?

PS. Haven't tested voice for GTalk/Jabber contacts yet, but SIP (called the landlines and cell phones half a world around) works very well.

IRC too, I use that a lot.

Once I was able to get MSN working on the built in client, I personally had no use for Pidgin. I like how the default chat program uses the LED light and larger display pictures.
