there was some traffic on the mailing list about that. from what i gathered, the GTA03 was to much in flux for it to be a reliable goal when the decision had to be taken.
some people on that list seems to suggest that the existing model should be re-designed to enable the use of a usb 3G dongle...

Sean Moss-Pultz also said they concentrate on a second device they have, which is not related to telephony.
Still he hopes there'll be a future for OpenMoko phones: He asks people to buy existing devices and develop and improve the software so that maybe at a later point they can continue the product line.
Well...
I personally think their main problem was the lack of a clear focus. They changed important parts of the system (like the toolkit) like other people change their underwear.
Isn't it one of the strengths of Maemo that it is reliable in this respect? It was GTK, DBUS, gconf and friends from day 1. Different versions, new details, but no complete change in the basic infrastructure. More professional overall.
