What I want to know, is if they knew they were making this phone, why didn't they just make the N900 a tablet?

Because this is capacitive, is it multi-touch as well?

No, they don't. There were others before Apple that used multi-touch. And for quicly typing on a screen keyboard with 2 fingers, multi-touch is mandatory, as well as for gaming. Devices with no keyboard or d-pad need multi-touch. That is the reality.

They did. Just don't put a SIM in it and *whoosh* it's a tablet. For the rest of us that actually WANTED it to be a phone, we put a SIM in it and *whoosh* it's a phone.

And I don't see how the X6 announcement has anything to do with the n900 anyway...the X6 is a symbian device.

Not true at all. The Nokia 5800 is Nokia's best-selling smartphone right now, it's selling on a similar scale to the iPhone and it has a plain old resistive touchscreen with single touch and no keypad.

You might like multitouch and it might be useful in some situations but it is not mandatory. If it was mandatory why are so many non-keyboard non-multitouch touchscreen phones selling so well?

Incidentally, resistive and capacitive technologies both have their advantages. This idea that capacitive is always better than resistive isn't true:
