One thing I like about my N95 is the ability to add several applications to the phone. I currently have several applications that if implemented in the new N900, it would be very wonderful.

1. Best Profiles - Changes the profile of your phone so that you don't get interrupted while at a meeting. I particularly use this application because I don't like people interrupting me in my sleep.

2.Ultimate Voice Recorder- This is another great application on my phone to record conversations on the phone. The application has been very useful when dealing with certain customer service representatives.

3. Blacklist - This is a great application to block off those that you don't like calling you. I have my ex who continuously calls me at various times added to the blocked list to have a piece of my mind. Great application.

4. Adv Lock - This is yet another application to keep things such as text message, phone book, pictures, etc private. Wonderful application.

If you feel there is an equivalent of any of these applications in the new N900, kindly have the link posted here so others can enjoy.

1. if profiles are settable from cmd line a cronjob can do it easily - add an UI for nicer interface
2. Total recall in my case but still would be nice to be able to hook in an record, I think with pulseaudio it will be possible to do it
3. again if it's possible to hook into it yes
4. hmm something like a gpg encrypted container could work here or any other form of encryption etc...

1. Profiles do exist in thevN900.
4. Stuff IS private as long as you don't share it. So I don;t get what it does.

To the OP: I guess we could search for these apps ourselves, but maybe you could provide links to the apps home pages, or videos, or instructions etc., so that people can get an idea exactly what these apps do?

It would be really cool if products like total recall tied in with the contacts list so that you can easily find the conversations. I think that this type of integration is the promise of an "open" platform. Though I would be happy with the functionality ported, i would prefer to see the functionality enhanced and better integrated with the OS.

Other apps I would love to see include:

I think because of open source..ANY apps (with a little modification) should work with N900 right? So all Apple apps will also work!! Developers just had to changed something up.

I don't think you're setting expectations at a logical level here.

Porting symbian (like the Nokia N95 in this example) or iphone applications is non-trivial to the extent that it's easier to just write an application in Maemo from scratch which covers the functionality of the Symbian or iphone application you wanted.

In any case, Maemo is older/more mature technology than iphone and in a lot of the cases I've seen, there's already a Maemo app that can do X.

In the less-than-best case if there isn't a Maemo app for your need and your need is a broad one, it's just a matter of time before someone who knows how to develop Maemo applications creates one.

And in the worst case, you can just learn to develop it yourself.

But Symbian and iphone applications on Maemo? Not really.
