Hi guys and gals,

Just wondering if the limit for multitasking on the N900 is the same for everyone.

Mine starts to lag at around 6-9 applications running simultaneously on the dashboard and it freezes up after the 12th application. I'm running on the latest firmware and the list of application running are :-

Web browser - 2-3 at the same time
Bounce
Internet radio
media list
phonebook
email
conversation list
calculator
PDF reader

I'm sure the N900 can process alot more than that seeing the applications that i run are just the basics. I search the web and found some users running up to 16 applications at once and not a single lag...

Now I'm just guessing if i got a defective unit..

It's not the number of applications that counts, but how resource-demanding those apps are. Bounce and other games can be very demanding. Also with web browser it depends on what sites you have open.

The highest i have seen on youtube was 32 or 33.
But it started to lag at 25 or so i can't quite remember.

But even with up to 10 different apps my device works smoothly. No problems so far. Hope someone finds a solution for your problem because i don't know much about Maemo/Linux yet .

depending on how much resources a program demands, you can theoretically have 100+ apps opened at the same time.

Thanks for the info.. I'm quite sure the N900 can handle more than what i have been running. And after watching several videos on youtube I'm pretty sure mine has some issues.

I'm just hope it's not a hardware issue... *sob!*

Bounce + internet radio + some browser windows is already heavy, they're all very demanding apps.

try to go to the menu and go browsing, while ur using videochat with GTalk...... hahahaha

biggest lags i have ever seen on my N900 :P

I had problems with my battery life and looked a bit deeper. Turned out that pulseaudio, the process that handles audio routing (and more) used up lots of cpu. It seems I triggered it using a stereo headset the switches to duplex low audio (no idea about the right term atm) when a call arrives. After restarting the unit it went away but only with the recent pr1.1 firmware update the problem seems to be permanently fixed.
So maybe your unit experiences the same problem, you can check by installing the load applet from the extras repository (i think it's already in there). It will display the cpu usage and the memory consumption in the 'taskbar' on the main screens as small bars. If the left bar (indicating the cpu usage) is not very small and grey when the device is idle, then you might have some background processes eating up to much cpu time.
If you want to dig deeper, in the extras-tools repository is an console application called "htop" that lists all running processes and lets you list by cpu or mem consumption. It's a console tool though and has no nice UI, also I don't know out of my head if it needs root access or can be started as user (i think the latest version comes with an icon to start it with, that should indicate it can be run as user, but as said - I'm not entirely sure).
Important is also to watch the device behaviour in idle mode over some time, in my case pulseaudio only 'acted up' for periods of time and not constantly.

I feel much better now... hahaha.. Will monitor more on the multitask on my N900..
