That slider is designed and put there to do just that? lock/unlock.....

It's not exactly the newest discovery. It's in the User Guide. I remember doing this way back in September, even.

Probably he has been using the power button to lock/unlock all this while. Anyway, thought it would be convenient if it can be re-configured to activate Silent profile? Never knows, may comes in handy especially if I want to silent the device without taking it out from its pouch/case

hahahah I thought it was meant for unlocking the battery cover only 
and yeah... always use double press power button!
