Use "apt-get" instead - it will take care of the dependencies.

i.e.:
# apt-get install vlc

dpkg is for packages that already reside on your local file system. It can't resolve any dependencies, that's why your first attempt failed.
apt-get will resolve all dependencies and download the required packages. It will actually call dpkg somewhere during the installation process. apt-get, however, requires the name of the package your going to install as a parameter, not the name of a file. That's why your second attempt also failed.

Add qole's directory which contains the VLC deb files.
Then use apt-get install vlc to install it.
Catalogue Name: Qole
Web address: http://qole.org/repository
Distribution: maemo
Components: fremantle
VLC doesn't have a UI atm, so it's command-line only for now.

Package vlc is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package vlc has no installation candidate

May I suggest instead of trying to install VLC to play your file, try using tablet-encode to re-encode your files for the N900. It'll probably save you a lot of headache.

To add qole's repository, go the the app manager, click up on the name to bring up the menu, application catalogues, new, and then fill in the info above.

Question guys, which would you say is more efficient (plays videos smoother) on the N900? Mplayer or VLC?

Also, is VLC optified?
