Definitely needed. Today i was transferring some files over ssh link in mc and ran out of diskspace. i think mc is using root for caching files.

That's one program I'd like to have installed ....but not until it's optified.

Install maemo-optify and run maemo-optify-deb on mc package. It should optify that package.
[Edit] I could upload optified MC, gnumeric, abiword and all needed additional libraries, but i don't know a good place for that

Maybe you could contact the maintainers of those packages and offer your help.

If you could meanwhile upload them to one of the free uploads (megaupload or whatever) I am sure some people (hint, like me, nudge nudge) would find the packages useful till they end up in the repositories.

Though right now I am working on trying to get the plugin for abiword for equations input working...

Question regarding this issue: maemo-optify is installed on the rootfs, means I need to enable extra-devel repo' right??
also, what if,for example x.deb is not optified, and I optify it using maemo-optify,but then it requires additional libs (dependencies...),do I need to manually optify each one of them as well??

Did that in the name of the Testing Squad (see, we do useful things, too ! ). We could patch it ourselves, but the idea is to collaborate with the maintainer and/or upstream so the patch can live, one-off fixes are not solving the problem.

Well that was a fail, a debian/optify file didn't work...
Will try again, but the last version upped doesn't include anything new :/
