Hi folks,

I'm a new N900/Maemo user. Would you please list some of your favorite or essential software apps that can be installed on the N900 - either from Nokia or third parties. It would also be great if you would indicate the price and a link to the provider. I find the N900 deficient in many ways, but I know that software upgrading can make it better. I hope that such a list will be useful for many people.

Thanks!

- The One Ring (Google Voice plugins from Extras-Devel) Be warned, there's a reason it's in devel, but it's awesome. You can feel like you're helping while you're using an awesome program.
- Mapper. It's already better than Ovi Maps in some ways. Soon enough it will be better in all ways, they say.
- Speedometer. That's the one that most of my buddies think is the coolest.
- msaber. Because you need it.
- FM Transmitter widget
- KOffice viewer. If there's a way it's inferior to the Docs2Go one, I can't find it. It's fine and free.
- DialCentral if you have a Google Voice account.
- Angry Birds. My son goes nuts over that one.
- All the Nintendo emulators.

That's my odd list. There are other threads about this around, but I get to be an early poster in this one.

  • BateryEye
  • Facebrick
  • Flashlight (and not just as a gimmick--it really works!)
  • OMWeather
  • OpenSSH (if you use SSH at all)
  • vpnc and vpnc-gui - I connect to the office network with it and use browser or ssh
  • htop
  • mail for exchange - I connect to an exchange server, not GMail--it works perfectly (though I would like to have the ability to respond to meeting requests, which is supposedly coming soon)
  • Personal IP Address - puts your IP on your desktop. Useful
  • Flipclock - not really useful...but pretty cool anyway

Also, apps I use regularly that integrate with apps I use on my laptop:
  • Conboy
  • KeepassX

I find I use the browser alot for things I see folks use apps for on other phones (e.g. my bank, check status of shipment on amazon, etc.) The browser is so damn good, you don't need the specialized apps they have on other phones for 90% of their activities. Or you can use firefox...
