The poll is now finished, and after admin and mod help to verify the scores the final order was:

CloudGPS
Advanced Geocaching Tool
modRana
MetroMap
Libellule

Thank you everyone for voting For further news or discussion please continue on the competition discussion thread.

We have 5 entries to judge from the location & navigation category. And we'd like your help with that!

Some entries are substantial ugrades to existing projects while others are completely brand new. There are prizes for the winners, so try them out and please vote for the author/project you feel deserves to win

Please understand some of these applications are in the development and testing repositories, there may be bugs or other issues that have not been discovered yet. You should be comfortable with that before installing any application. Also, zero flaming in the voting threads please.

Voting closes on July 29. More info on these 5 entries can be found in the post below.

You have one vote in this category and it can't be changed later! So use it wisely!

Application name: Advanced Geocaching Tool (new features)
Author: webhamster

Description: AGTL, the all-in-one solution for on- and offline geocaching, makes geocaching paperless!

It downloads geocaches including their description, hints, difficulty levels and images. No premium account needed. Searching for caches in your local db is a matter of seconds.
Map view - supporting Open Street Maps and Open Cycle Maps by default, configurable for other map types, including google maps.
GPS view - shows the distance and direction to the selected geocache.
Cache details - all necessary details are available even in offline mode.
Paperless geocaching features - take notes for a geocache on the go, see the hints and spoiler images, check the latest logs.
Fieldnotes support - Ever came home after a long tour and wondered which of those geocaches you found? Never again: Log your find in the field and upload notes and log text when you're at home. Review them on the geocaching website and post the logs.
Text-to-Speech-Feature! - Select a target, activate TTS and put your earplugs in to enjoy completely stealth geocaching.
Download map tiles for selected zoom levels - for offline use
Multicache calculation help - Let your phone do the math for you. Working for the most multi-stage geocaches, AGTL finds the coordinate calculations and let you enter the missing variables.
Advanced waypoint handling - AGTL finds waypoints in the geocache descriptions, in the list of waypoints and even in your notes. For your convenience, they're displayed on the map as well - see where you have to go next.
Search for cities - in the geonames.org database to navigate quickly
Sun compass - Compensates the lack of a magnetic compass
Instant update feature - Follow web site updates as soon as possible.

Application name: CloudGPS
Author: Damian Waradzyn

Description: CloudGPS is a complete rewrite of the J2ME version (hosted on sourceforge / http://cloudgps.sourceforge.net/) to N900 using OpenGL ES for smooth operation. First alpha release is very limited in function but it still may be of use for someone. It allows exploring "OpenStreetMap I" map (it shares tiles with Maep and possibly others) but future versions will allow other map sources. It can show / follow your current location. Planned features include searching and routing using CloudeMade services, portrait mode and more. This project aims to provide great user experience - no more lags or delays This release easily works with over 50 frames per second on my N900. Future versions should be even more optimized than current one.

Why isn't this thread sticky? Almost 4 hours since its start and only six votes. Bump.

Well, presumably people are taking the time to install and test each of the applications.

I've released Version 0.7.0.2 of the Advanced Geocaching Tool, which fixes three bugs:
- downloading of virtual geocaches
- python-hildon dependency (lists not clickable)
- python-dbus dependency (application crashing on startup)

Congratulations to dwaradzyn and the CloudGPS widget! Our very first N900 Location & Navigation Coding Competition Winner!

But well done to everyone! It was a small group, but one filled with real quality and terrific entries from everyone

We'll be in touch with the winners soon to let you know what ya get, keep checking the competition thread for updates

And thank you for everyone who voted, I hope you enjoyed the contest and got to learn a bit more about the projects.

And don't forget everyone, these are open sourced projects developed by folk in their spare time and provided to you for free! And if you liked what you seen, why not approach the developers and ask if you can get involved too!

Congratulations to all!

I couldn't find libgles1 so I couldn't install CloudGPS, and I voted for modRana as having comfortable interface and many features, including logging, (though some small bugs also).

My city doesn't have the underground, so I couldn't vote for MetroMap.

And Libellule needs Internet, doesn't it? I cannot spin Wi-Fi out of thin air.
