so im unable to flash emmc - device is not being recognized. can i just right click on the drive and hit format to FAT32?

No you can't.
do you try that with win 7?
if yes flash your desktop and install ubuntu or win xp on it......

im on xp. the OS is flashing fine but when its time for emmc, the device is not recognized then the usb-pc connecttivity gets lost..

this can have many reasons.
1:it only works good with windows xp sp3
2:make sure you use the original nokia usb cabel
3
vi suite should be shut down.
4:use only your back usb ports cause the front ones(from your desktop)can cause problems
5:flash first the fiasco without the -R(the r stands for reboot)
and strict after that the emmc your phone should not boot boot between the both commands.
if this don't work the first time try it another time with another usb port until it runs.
but don't forget that on some desktops it DIDN'T run on xp sp2.
if you have sp2 update to 3

i upgraded to xp3 and turned on PC suite and it worked, EMMC started flashing then! nice! is there a solve button here?

Maybe add to the wiki that SP3 is recommended/needed?

for some users it works with sp2 for some not.
i had problems with sp2 and i had to update.
wasn't easy cause i hadn't a genuine xp.
but with some tweaks and some little hacks it worked.
