IMO, the following points play a part of the success of any OS, and having as many of them would be better:

IMO, the following points play a part of the success of any OS, and having as many of them would be better:
- Openess
- Number and quality of applications, of which a key element is:
- Appeal to developers
- Having as less fragmentation as possible
- Integration with useful and popular services (like Google services in case of Android)
- (if we are talking about products, not just about OSes, then) Hardware quality
Hope I didn't miss anything...

There's also the stab-the-customer-in-the-back factor (eg Maemo's cherry, or WebOS' GPS tracking).

I thought Symbian was Open Source?
Anyways, what ever catagory you put it in, it appears as though that would be the key to Success. (...But then it is the daddy of the smartphone OS's.)
