It seems that the strange camera/photo problem I am having was just the beginning...
The N900 is now acting even more strangely. For the past 3 days, it will not hold a charge for more than a few hours (about 5 hours, max), even with no applications running and no phone use. After charging, the indicator shows that the battery is at 100%.
The phone is not even a year old.
Also, when I'm using IM programs, there is often strange behavior. Randomly, the predictive text will stop working, as well as automatic capitalization. Often, "Conversations" will just shut down all IM windows due to some error.
I have restarted the phone several times since this began.

Anything I should look into?

Have you tried flashing it?
Might do the trick.

Arrgh...
Just tried flashing it. Took forever to figure out how to do it according to the various conflicting "How to" guides, but I finally thought it would work (using my Windows 7 x64 laptop).
But, as it was flashing, I executed this step:
C:\Program Files (x86)\maemo\flasher-3.5>flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_COMBINED_002_ARM.bin -f
after flashing the eMMC seemed to complete successfully, and instead of taking 2-5 minutes as the instructions said it would, it quickly went through a list after showing
SW version in image: RX-51_2009SE_20.2010.36-2.002_PR_002
and then ended with this within a few seconds:
Raw data transfer EP found at EP2.
Using flashing protocol Mk II.

C:\Program Files (x86)\maemo\flasher-3.5>

Something has gone wrong. But I don't know what and cannot figure it out from all the threads I've been reading on the subject.

Does anyone have a clue?

It wont work on 64bit. Try using a 32bit OS or use Windows XP Mode in Windows 7 64bit.

Let me know if you still have problems..

You can't flash using 64 bit windows. It is stated quite clearly in the wiki, the only information you will ever need regarding flashing.

I suggest you use the power search to search the term 'updating', click the first result and read.

It seems your only issue is user error!

Do it like this.
disconnect every thing. turn the phone off.

open cmd and type
cd "%ProgramFiles%\maemo\flasher-3.5"

flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_2.2009.51-1_PR_COMBINED_MR0_ARM.bin -f

The bit in the bold should match with the file name you have downloaded!

now the flasher will say "waiting for a suitable device.
take the battery out of your phone, plug the usb into your phone. Hold the U key, put the battery in. Keep holding the U key until the cmd starts showing the file transfer!

then to flash emmc (32gb)

flasher-3.5.exe -F RX-51_2009SE_10.2010.13-2.VANILLA_PR_EMMC_MR0_ARM.bin -f

Again the bold bit should match your Vanilla image you have downloaded

Both files are different. One is Kernel and the other is Vanilla!

Trying again, and it seems like it might work this time... It's doing something differently.
I'll inform if it works...

On second attempt, using same steps as first, the process ended with this:
Finishing flashing... done
CMT flashed successfully

Fingers crossed...

Device has not rebooted, as guides have stated it should.
Yellow LED is lit.
