I know I have posted a few of these lately, but I have some time to work on an app, and I am trying to gauge interest before I start developing (I don't want to waste my time developing an app that no one will use).

I have seen a few people post about being interested in subsonic (a music / video streaming program that you host on your server). It looks like it has a pretty solid api, so I am think about developing a player for maemo.

My only concern is that they require a donation (minimum of 10 euros) to continue using the software after 30 days, which feels a bit weird for an open source application... How do people feel about this, and how many people would be interested in using this.

Well you can always edit the server's code a little and build it again I'm personally more interested in MPD.

I have had subsonic over 30 days and it doesn't require any donation. Any links to page that states this?

I hope that you have noticed that there actually is request for this kind of app on meego/maemo coding contest page

But still when doing open source you should first think yourself and do what you want! Do stuff that you want to use and enjoy.

Now I noticed. So to stream from this server trought API you need premium server? Streaming to web browser doesn't have this restriction?

http://www.subsonic.org/pages/apps.jsp

Correct. Use of the api (which is what I would use) requires purchase of a license.

Do you need to get the license or anybody who wants to use the app? If it's you, I'll donate it for you

Yes, I'm interested in this, as somebody is porting/packaging subsonic for QNAP NAS, so the combination would be awesome

I just found this:
http://my-tech-notes.blogspot.com/20...m-license.html

it turns out the license is just the md5sum of a valid e-mail address.... way to go subsonic...

Anyway, I'd donate anyway if it is good, I just hate it when they turn your arm to do so...

Hmm... Interesting.

I think I am going to try to write a basic music player for this, and based on interest decide how much to improve it. I could probably make a amazon cloud player client pretty easily too once I have the basic program done.

Anyone good at making qml interfaces, and want to team up?

I see that a subsonic client is on the proposals page for the coding competition (http://wiki.maemo.org/MeeGo_Coding_C...ation_proposal), maybe not too late to join?
