OK, as you confirmed my problem with the USB mass storage mode, I do know that it is the mounted file on a (also) mounted device.
I am afraid we have to live with that, But there is a workaround:
before putting N900 into mass storage mode, type in x-term
Code:
sudo umount -l /home/user/MyDocs
afterwards (MyDocs will get mounted automatically) we have to mount the maps file again with
Code:
sudo mount /home/user/MyDocs/.maps
But vi_ has another thread open with a hint to do that automatically, I did not have time to check/test that myself.

run df. You should see something like

/home/user/MyDocs/.mappero_disk 4182016 1685044 2496972 40% /home/user/MyDocs/.maps

I just put a plain file named 'mount_point' or any other meaningful into the mount point directory. To be checked easily with 'ls'. But 'df' is also good idea.

Looks like it is working pretty well

Hm, I think I will just copy things to my SD card and move it to internal memory if necessary

Surely, 5% and 23% - there is an advantage of ~700M free. But anyway I see two more reasons to use ext FS. Maybe you can reduce my number:
1/ the rights - I want to have all odd-numbered subdirs for mappero readonly - to keep only every second zoom tile - with the actual zoom level the maps details are too faint to view (I didnt manage? under fat).
2/ I can imagine to link some more map directories from SD card anytime when needed.

OK.
Point 1 is not to beat (at all).
If you like/need read/write access to set explicitly, there is no other chance than ext (1024 bs ?). The vFat image itself may be mounted write protected, but only the complete imgae (not down to single directories).
And I do not mind anyone to use ext, my personal favorite is vFat.

Point 2 may also be achieved with whatever file system you use.
)ust map the single Map Providers as storage files (e.g. OSMI and OSMII) to as many directories you need under /home/user/MyDocs/.maps/xxx.
