great so i have my new n900 for THREE! days and i hadnt got around to fully flashing the device and formatting it to factory, i get home today, plug in the usb cable and great once again the bloody usb cable has fell out! ~.~ second n900 this has happened to me! gah!
so is there ANYWAY of formatting the internal memory and starting afresh without the usb cable?

No. It isn't possible without a USB cable.

It is possible if you use BackupMenu with a clean image.

Even with that you still need at least 75% charged battery or you end up with a brick.

I have doubts whether or not if OP does have backupmenu installed or not.
