There are a number of different clients I can use to call people... like skype, jabber, gtalk, etc.

But the only way I can call them is to open the phone dialpad and type in their user name.

Inside Contacts there are buttons to IM them, but not call them.

I remember once seeing a button to "skype call" (different from the button "call with skype") but now that is gone too.

Is there a way to get those buttons?

Have you checked in Contacts - Settings - Display video calling option?

This should enable the option to chat/call via IM, as long as your availability is online.

Your availability has to be "online" and same for your phone.
Your contacts also have to be online, green dot besides their name and on that moment you'll see the extra buttons like call and video call
