Are you able to use the play/pause/fast forward buttons?

Yup, all the buttons (volume and answer keys also) work with the N9.

why not get the nokia-made bh111 bluetooth stereo headset, its colors match your n9 perfectly and work fully with n9,

No, I am looking for a wired solution mainly because:
1. Battery consumption: how is the battery consumption for the BH111 for playing continuous music?
2. I travel by public transportation a lot and pick pocketing is a problem. With my wired headset listening to music, i can know if my device is being stolen

I just bought the Nuforce NE-700m and they don't work with the N9 at all. Tried them on the N900 and can hear music but with a buzzing noise.

Strange because I was using the Nuforce NE-6 well with the N9 & N900.

Will either get an adapter or give to an iphone user for xmas.

changed the headphones at the shop to 700x with no mic, they sound great.

I did the same, and got the same problem. They work just fine with my gf's N8 though. :-/

Anyone going to get the new Nokia/Monster Purity earphones? My Bose in-ear ones are starting to crumble into nothing, and the blue Purity's would match my new cyan N9 quite nicely
There's a store in NYC selling them for just over 100 bones
