Hi, I've got an unbranded Nokia N9, updated OTA to PR1.1 (20.2011.40-4_PR_009).

Ever since PR1.0, I've had a "Hidden Wi-Fi" shown in the network list. It is always visible on the phone, no matter the location. The network is not shown on eg. my laptop or my N900.

What is this network? Why is it showing? Is it a leftover from development?

It is for adding a hidden network.

Hmm, don't think so.

To test, I selected the "Hidden Wi-Fi", and pressed "Connect" and when prompted for the SSID, I simply made up my own name, "test", and pressed "Connect" again. Got the message "Can't find that network".

Edit: Er, I think I understand what you meant now - it is for connecting to a hidden network (present or not). I guess that explains it. But why show this in the list when there are no hidden networks available? I though hidden networks were visible as hidden networks nevertheless, right?

This is to connect to a wireless network that exists in the range, but does not broadcast the SSID (name of their wifi network).

It will ask for an SSID and tries to attach to the provided SSID.

When configuring a wifi network, you have the option to broadcast or hide SSID. Since most people just broadcast, which is the default for most routers, their networks shows up in the list. Some advanced users hide their SSID as an additional step to secure their wifi network.

The "Hidden Wi-Fi" in the menu doesn't imply the existence of a hidden wi-fi. It's just an option in case there is one.

What we are missing for our N9 is a Wi-Fi analyzer app to list properties of wi-fi networks in the vicinity like SSID, lock status, channel no. and signal strength to assist in connecting.

It must be a Nokia anomaly - my old E75 used to show a hidden network...even though there deffo wasn't one.
