Hi all,

if you don't use Sydney Buses read no further unless you are a bus enthusiast of course

This application is an interface to the SMS service which lists the upcoming buses for a given stop.

Source:

github harmattan organization

Binary
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/25529310/busms_0.0.5_armel.deb

Details
  • favourites view ( bus stops)
  • search for stops by number/name
  • location based display of nearby stops.
  • send SMS with stop number and display the return ( this currently only works intermittently for me – maybe a vodafone issue. Feedback please.

Known Issues
  • SMS delivery problems (Vodafone)
  • long delay on start up , then no reply message displayed
  • application not responding on arrival of reply - disable delete message setting.

I'll try and test this at termini.

(There's big trouble if I touch my phone whilst driving the bus)

Yep. For other cities I need databases of stop locations and service definitions.

How do I get the black marker / icon to show where the bus-stops are?

Apart from that I'm finding the UI good.

I have used this just via text and want to make sure you know that it (in essence) texts the upcoming SCHEDULED services to your phone. That is the ones that are printed on the stop. It does NOT take into account any late running, or use the buses GPS.

Can't see why that would be the case. It just uses the normal SMS service . In the display the scheduled services are not as prominent (set to a lower opacity).

The Nokia maps need a data connection. So when you click on the marker tool icon - with a little patience - a map should come up somewhere around Erskineville and once the positioning has been fixed it jumps to your position. (see screen shots).
So your SMS was delivered and you got a reply fairly quickly. What network are you with?

If you tap on a marker the list below jumps to the item.

It open around Ersko and then jumps to my current location

There are (the outline of) stars in a list - bus stops that aren't a favourite, and (filled) stars - stops that are favourites. There are no icons on the map showing the stops Without being at the stop (to know its number) its hard - at times - to know what side of the road the stop is on.

No sms for 10 minutes, am with Crazy Johns (Vodafone). BUT when I sent an SMS directly to 0488898287 with the stop number BOTH sms's arrived within 5 seconds. I don't know if this is because of the network or ...

I hope I'm helping

A relief - kind of. I have implemented a workaround in the settings.
When you select this it will send the message via the conversation composer.

It would be good though if there was some way within the app of specifying arrival times for only certain routes from a bus stop that services more than 1 route.
Unti I can come up with a better solution you can use the above "vodafone hack" for this purpose. It brings up the message editor. Just add the bus numbers there.

Also, for waiting times of more than 20 minutes it seems to cut off the time unless you turn the phone landscape. Not a big problem but I thought I might as well mention it.
Will fix.

Also, in the settings pane I turned on the 'Remove messages from conversation' setting and it does delete the messages, the only problem is it doesn't seem to clear the notification until I actually click on the notification or open the Messages app.
I don't know if I have control over this. Have to do some digging in the docs.
