Linking in with FOSS Alternatives thread http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=90862 and http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...5&postcount=23

I would like to post up a workaround to make D-Bus and default icons call the application of your choice. Useful for those applications with widgets etc.
This was requested and I felt it was better in it's own thread.

PLEASE SEE CAVEAT
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...2&postcount=15

ALSO SEE UPDATE FOR --background in Qalendar

Below requires root

>Replace MP for OMP
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/com.nokia.mediaplayer.service

Replace
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/mediaplayer
for
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/openmediaplayer
>Replace osso-filermanager for hamsterfiler
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/com.nokia.osso-filemanager.service

Replace
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/osso-filemanager
for
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/hamsterfiler
>Replace Calender for qalendar
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/com.nokia.calendar.service

Replace
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/Calendar
for
Code:
Exec=/usr/bin/qalendar --background
This could work on a range of applications for example

>Replace Browser (without installing browser-switchboard)
/usr/share/dbus-1/services/com.nokia.browser.service

Replace for /usr/bin/"foo" (browser of choice)

Is it possible simply to comment out the original lines, for ease of reverting should the need, or indeed the desire, arise?

Yep, I don't see why not.
Notice the comment at the top of the file anyway

I really should have had a look in the file before I asked! Anyway, I can confirm commenting the stock line with a hash works perfectly. I also should mention that you need to restart your phone before the setting change takes effect.

I had no trouble with changing my calendar service without a reboot this week.
Also IIRC I changed my mediaplayer service ages ago and didn't reboot either.

Odd, didn't seem to do that for me - c'est la vie, it certainly worked after the reboot.

I can confirm that at least replacing the file manager with hamsterfiler and calendar with qalendar worked immediately without needing to reboot.

(would have been sad to be forced to reboot after 70d of uptime)

How about those of us who uninstalled the stock applications?

For example, I have completely uninstalled osso-filemanager and do not have com.nokia.osso-filemanager.service in /usr/share/dbus-1/services.

Lucky you! I had to reboot just yesterday. Clicked the Stop button too soon when the alarm notification popped up, before the tune started playing. The notification UI closed but the alarm started playing with no way to stop it.

I've had that too. Once. Now I wait a bit and actually wake up with the alarm *sound*

Wait, do you have CSSU-T/thumb installed? If that is the case, please file a bug.
