Hm... What if we no longer need Nokia's OS?

Ubuntu Mobile looks like it would be amazing, and I seriously doubt that they wouldn't bother compiling it for ARM.

This would be... so amazing to have a truly open system on the Internet Tablet line, and Nokia could put more time into hardware instead of listening to us ***** about their crappy software. my guess is that as always the main issue will be drivers. i dont know about the n800 but i recall some driver issues on the 770.

I don't want to burst you bubble but I'm not sure ubuntu mobile will ever run on a nokia 770/800 ... even if they compile the code for armel.

and those beats look more like portable PC then smartphone (like 770/800).

I guest UMPC will be a lot heavier, bigger and shorter battery life.

I personally think that this is about the only thing Nokia could do to save the platform. To just open it up and allow a more common Unix in there as opposed to the IMNSHO goofy "Hildon" nonsense along with a platform independent development environment...ahhh, dreams!

I could be completely wrong here, but do note that this UI is built on top of the same pieces that Nokia uses for the N800. It is quite possible, actually quite likely that much of this will be portable.

Steps in transition from Maemo UI to UME UI

* To move the user interface from the Maemo UI to the UME UI, we do the following:
o Hide the task navigator (a panel). (/etc/hildon-desktop/desktop.conf file change)
o Create a new panel and place it at the top. (/etc/hildon-desktop/desktop.conf file change)
o Tell matchbox not to show window decorations
o Add new plugins to our top panel (application menu and statusbar)
o Change the theme
o Create a home area plugin for navigation.

Arm port will not be official ... but an arm port will be done but not officially supported.

You do, of course, realise that MIDLinux and Ubuntu Mobile are *both* based on exactly the same Hildon that Nokia developed?

saw a post last day on a debian malling list, they (armel group .. not sure who they are) made a official demand to be a official port of debian. Their request look quite complete but i'm not sure it will be approved.

too bad i can't find the link anymore.
