Hello guys,

Even as being a newbie on the forum, I decided to start with a 'sticky' proposal..

We really need a topic about working apps. So, when ever someone finds something is ported to IT Os 2008, you could add the information here.

Here are the couple of first ones:

1. Bomberman
2. ScummVM

Anyone tried (list from the top of my head):

vnc
pidgin(otr)
x-terminal
ssh
camera 2.7 (the one with video recording, unless now it's _finally_ standard?)
xmaeme
fceu
quake
abiword (was ported i think, and it was now easier as per article somewhere...)

I'm going to wait for Pidgin and Kagu before upgrading. Maemo Mapper, Canola and VNC viewer would also be high on the list.

The default IM app on the tablet also lets you do that with Jabber.

Wrong. The built-in Jabber client with a Jabber server that supports transports is far and away the best choice for AIM/MSN/Yahoo/whatever.

jabberquebec.net, but I'm not sure if it's still accepting people.

I'm kind of interested in offering Jabber services specifically to tablet users as part of a larger tablet offering. As to when that might get off the ground... I haven't a clue. Money's tight at the moment... we'll see.

Tried to change all repos to "Bora" and after that there are even more missing libraries... :(

With default Chinook repositories I'm missing libbz2-1.0 and libgdm3.

Can anyone recommend a good, stable Jabber server that I could run at home, which supports MSN and Yahoo, so that I can use the in-built client. Preferably one which won't take much more effort than installing pidgin would, because I'm lazy :)

Also, does/can Jabber work over port 80, so that I can use it from locked-down networks?

Thanks

You need to have an FQDN on your home computer if you want it to be available outside of your own internal network.

Zero, got that. I have a static IP on my DSL at home. As I understand it (with my limited research) I can run a jabber server which effectively proxies to MSN etc... Is this correct?

I already run web, mail and asterisk servers, so adding a jabber server won't be an issue. I just don't want to spend ages trying to get something working that doesn't offer me any real advantage over pidgin, hence the desire for something straightforward. Even better would be if I can "yum install" it :)

Sounds like you're running Linux servers. :) Check out Openfire:

http://www.igniterealtime.org/projects/openfire/index.jsp

Works great for me with FC7 installed from their RPM. Then you can just add the IM Gateway plugin via the Openfire Web Admin and even add your other services there.

JabberD is available via Yum, but I had trouble with it and the N800 using TLS. Openfire worked perfectly and is much more flexible. (And has a very nice web admin to manage it)

You can change the port numbers, but would obviously have to do that client side also.

pixelseventy2

Thanks moonshine, I'll give opernfire a go. I am indeed running linux, the nearest I get to windows on any of my machines is an instance of vmplayer for connecting to my work vpn. My server runs Centos, so there is little real difference between that and FC7.

If I can get it to run over 443 hopefully I can get through my work firewall too :)

It also has an interesting little Asterisk plugin that will notify you of calls and change your Jabber status. (On phone, etc)

Now if I could just find *one* PC Jabber client that supports "jingle-video". I swear the N800 is leading the world in that category.

moonshine, what are your settings for openfire? I have installed the server and created a user, but I can't connect from the n800. I downloaded Spark to try and that works fine. I even ran a tcpdump looking for data, but nothing comes in to the server from the n800, but it does from Spark.

2) Reggie (http://www.internettablettalk.com/author/reggie/)would be kind enough to make a 'sticky' llink to it in the forum, so as to attract everybody's attention.

Got Kagu and A2DP working, which also means mplayer. mplayer gui doesn't work, but all you need is mplayer itself working for A2DP. The problem getting bluez and mplayer installed was the new version of dbus. It's changed from /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.2 to /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.3. All I did was symlink .3 to .2 and a forced install of the two packages. Then I edited the install.sh script milhouse did to skip installation of those packages. Works like a charm.

Quick and dirty instructions:
Install Kagu through normal means. I just installed it by the .deb directly. It complained about something(I think dbus not being configured properly), but still showed up on my menu.
Follow the instructions the here (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=8435&highlight=a2dp). gainroot is already installed, it looks like. Go until you're supposed to becomeroot and do ./install.sh again. It won't work. You'll need to do the following:

ln -s /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.3 /usr/lib/libdbus-1.so.2
dpkg -i --force-all sbc-svn_20070608-1_armel
dpkg -i --force-all plugz-svn_20070608-1_armel.deb
dpkg -i --force-all mplayer_1.0rc1-maemo.18.n800_armel.deb

Then you'll need to change install.sh and just delete a pile of lines. Basically from line 12 to 21, delete or comment out. Run it like that as root, and it'll do its last configuration and tell you to reboot. After that, Kagu works with A2DP again.

Correction: mplayer gui seems to work, but A2DP headset buttons don't for me. I'm looking into it.

VNC Server works (x11vnc_0.8-3_armel.deb)

But no luck with VNC Viewer on OS2008. There are dependencies on old libraries which I fetched with apt-get and then did manage to install VNC Viewer, but it fails to launch.

My splicer utility works if you have python installed. You could use it as an alternate way of launching videos in mplayer since it appears they still don't have 'open with' functionality :(

http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=9024&p=77152

Interesting to note the gtk dialogs (which i prefer) seem faster and fit screen better than gtk version in 2007.

If you need to edit the app list you will need editor like (leafpad?) installed and use splicer to open/edit the /usr/lib/splicer/splicer.apps file with that editor.

omweather 0.19.1 would not install for me complaining about the following missing packages:
libdbus-1-2 (>=0.61)
osso-ic-lib

Did you mean it works with forced install or is there a version for OS2008?

EDIT: nevermind, I could install it fine after I manually installed those two packages from bora repository - for some reason application manager would list them but it would not install them automatically.

Also can't add to the wiki-

fourrivers version 1.1-1 works
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=309&release_id=775

xmame 0.58.1-6 works
https://garage.maemo.org/frs/?group_id=87&release_id=324
but you have to get used to running games from command line.
...actually I am quite sure mame is noticeably faster and more playable on os2008 (especially with the bluetooth keyboard ftw)

...otherwise, tomiku installs but is missing libhildonwidgets.so.0
and IDEA installs and runs but is VERY buggy and troublesome.

Apparently only users in one of the groups user, Administrators, Moderators, Super Moderators can edit the wiki.

Anyway, I just wanted to say that I tracked down the incompatibilities between version down to an incompatibility between the following libraries:
hildon-libs0 (from os2007, won't install on os2008) and
osso-af (new in os2008).

hildon-fm1, a library commonly needed for software originating in os2006 will also not install without hildon-libs0.

Apparently, hildon-libs0 will not be updated, so most os2007 applications will never install without a recompile. And we already know that many applications were never recompiled from os2006 to os2007. abiword, anyone?

There is also a conflict between libossomime0 (os2007) and libhildonmime0 (os2008) but it seems to concern less applications. libdbus-1-2 has also been updated to libdbus-1-3, maybe a symbolic link is all what is needed in that case.

Smartlauncher needs to be removed or noted. It installs fine on my N800 w/ OS2008, but is often nonresponsive, or opens a different app than what I touched (and not the app right next to it. Like, if I press the furthest right icon, it'll open the furthest left)

Just added GPE.

Can someone edit Contents to include a section called Office-Business and move GPE to that? I can't figure out how to do it. This would help keep the Wiki consistent with Maemo.org Categories.

Hmm... when I tried installing it just errored on a different dependency "libxau0" which appears to be available for Bora but not Chinook.

I added libxau0 from repository.maemo.org (bora free) and it seems to work though.

Right now I'm just using the built-in RSS reader and downloading them that way. It works, but it's a pain to manage.

I just tried Knips (camera snapshots) from that repository and it works. Someone was looking for a camera app the other day, now there is one.

Unfortunately it is still using very little jpeg compression... files are close to 300KB each for a 640x480 low quality image. IMHO, if the camera can't take good pictures, then at least compress them a reasonable amount (eg. 80% quality brings it well under 100KB) so that they don't waste a lot of space and are more suitable for direct attachment to an email. I tried to contact Eduardo (aka Etrunko), the guy who first ported Xournal, through his blog, but with no luck.
Now here are my questions, are there any other people interested in Xournal, possibly more experienced than me, for going on together in this project? And, maybe I better wait for those libraries to appear in official repos, instead that doing it myself? Thanks for your advice :-)

I had to follow these instuctions at the command line to get glade working:

I found the command above here (Thanks Khertan):
http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showpost.php?p=97622&postcount=6

Then for some reason it wouldn't launch with the gpodder_loader wrapper script that it was using for the menu icon, so I edited
/usr/share/applications/hildon/gpodder.desktop
and changed "Exec=/usr/bin/gpodder_loader" to "Exec=/usr/bin/gpodder" and it works now!

All gpodder_loader did was preload something called /usr/bin/connectivity_preload.sh but that file isn't there now, so I guess it doesn't need it to start.

EDIT: I did find out more about that connectivity_preload.sh on this page under "Automatic Connection" http://maemo.org/development/documentation/tutorials/Maemo_tutorial_bora.html

They don't need one. They just need to use the Chinook OS2008 SDK.

The SDK doesn't act the same way as the device, though (it's an SDK, not an emulator); so developers generally are reluctant to properly release things they've not tested on the device itself. And, supposedly, the device programme codes were supposed to be working alongside the release of the device in mid-November. If the delay between the release of the device and an actual chance to finish the testing was only going to be a few days, there's no problem with waiting.

Also, open source software is primarily about scratching itches - until developers get their discounted devices the primary motivation would have to be altruism.

Altruism and selfishness *together* drive OSS, one or the other on its own just isn't as effective.

I'm interested in this too. I'm waiting for my N810 still but I would very much like this app.

The "forbidden" sounds like you were trying to use your web browser to access the repository. If you add the repository via the Application Manager or directly to: /etc/sources.list.d/hildon-application-manager.list via your favorite editor, It should work fine.

I don't have my web site set up so you can directly download *.deb files. I don't even know if I can do that with a godaddy hosted site, since I don't have ssh access to set permissions.

I use apt-get from the command-line or the Nokia Application Manager and it works fine for me. If that's not the case (browser access) please let me know, so I can work on fixing things. Otherwise, the debian way is to set up your repository list so apt-get (or Application Manager) can access them.

My packages scratch my itch, but I appreciate feedback so anyone else can grab them too :)

I've fixed http://www.elkins.org/packages so it's browsable. AFAIK, that's not the Debian way...but you can directly download debs if you're not using Application Manager or apt-get. Look in /packages/binary for debs.

For now, I'm back to using gpodder until I can tryout the new version of Canola.

What error messages do you get when you try to install? How are you trying to install (ie: using apt-get; Application Manager; one-click)? Have you looked at the Log in Application Manager - what does it say?

I have tried through both app manager and going to Maemo and the "Top download" and clicking through the links. It goes to app manager either way, asks if I want to install, sits there saying "Downloading" then after 15 or so secs says "Download Failed", been acting this way since upgrading to the latest firmware about 2 weeks ago.

Ok... open Applications Manager then tap Menu->Tools->Log see what it says there. This will give you a fairly detailed description of why your download is failing. Post the last logged attempt to install and we'll see if we can't figure it out.

There is another option but it's more complicated so let's start with this one first :)

For the bulk of your problems it appears that your memory card (MMC2) seems to be in read-only mode, maybe corrupted? Application manager cannot download needed packages. Check the settings of application manager and disable this: Use MMC to download packages.

For the 'Public Key' error - you could try 'apt-get update' in Xterm as root. That should get the newest key for you.

Wierd about the card not able to be written to...

I wrote the log to it to get it to my PC for uploaded here...

I guess I could reformat it to get it back in shape and try again...Where in Control Panel is the setting to use the external memory? I looked in memory and am not seeing where to turn it off.

Did a google search and found becomeroot, but can't install it due to the above issue. In a catch-22 situation now, can get become root to get becomeroot but can't download become root to become root.

I will try that and the Xterm command. BTW, what is the default root password on a N810?

I am a N8x0 newbie and my Unix/Linux knowledge is thirty years out of date, so take this for what it's worth.

But when I've seen the "Memory card in use" message, it's been because I had an app or dialog open that referenced a folder or file on the card.

Have you tried turning your unit off and on (i.e., rebooting)? I've seen one or two strange repeatable behaviors on my N810 that have been cured by rebooting.

If that doesn't shake it loose, see what processes are running. Maybe someone can post, for comparison, a list of the processes running in a clean OS 2008 with no apps installed.

I had a corrupted swap file on my N800 that I cleared by shutting down the N800, removing the internal SD card and, using a card-reader on a PC, deleted the swap file. I could not figure out any other way to get rid of the problem which started with 'Unable to connect via USB, Memory card in use: Internal Memory card' and then went rapidly downhill.

I am not recommending this, but it worked for me. If you have an N810 then I don't know what you can do.

1. Proceed with caution.

2. Do not alter, move. or delete any files unless you have made a back-up copy, know how to use the back-up, and are reasonably certain of the consequences of your actions.

3. No sniveling if things go wrong.

Sorry, I was not sure if you had an N800 or an N810.

Since it is an N810 then I presume that the swap file is on the internal (built-in and fixed) SD memory which you cannot remove. So if your problem is a corrupted swap file then I have no idea what you can do about it. Maybe if you tried to allocate a smaller swap file then it might lose the existing one?

Eugh. Red Pill mode shouldn't be the default fallback position - I'd really recommend you raise it with Jeff Elkins.

This kind of workaround (and I group the gronmayer solution to the repository mess in here), massively raises the barrier of entry to the NITs. Solving the problems properly doesn't really take much more work, it just requires different people to do it.

Short version: I very strongly believe all software should be in extras (or extras-testing for non-production quality stuff) which no dependencies on any packages which aren't in the default repository list, or in the same repository.

Anything less than that is sub-optimal in so many ways.
