Sorry if this is a dumb question, but is it possible with OS2008 to listen radio stations and see TV based on WinMedia streams? (With OS2007 I just am able to listen RM and MP3 based stations) Thanks.

According to the specs the media player can handle wmv files also. i did not try it . I tried to stream embedded wmv in the micro b and tried to open the link in media player but it says media not found.

So that is until where i got...

you can try any wm radio, just pick one on www.vtuner.com and see what happens (vtuner is a nice radio listing by country, with stream type indication for each station)

I was talking about streaming video not radio. I dont have it right now but will do later on. I use shoutcast.com to stream internet radio stations.

For unsupported streams I use TVersity (http://tversity.com)UPnP streaming the stream (HA) and with the 2007 OS either canola or media streamer to watch/listen. Now w/ the 20008 OS it seems that the regular built in media player plays very nicely with UPnP, so I use that with TVersity. I haven't tried any of the streams that were not previously supported directly.

Yes, I have also used TVersity and ORB, but want to know if the 2008 OS can handle WM streams (radio &/or TV) directly . As you can see, almost 70% of commercial radios streams on that format.

Win media streams came back with "Could not play media, corrupted playlist" or something similar.

Ooohh...bad news :(
Sorry for my ignorance, but Is it a matter of hardware limitation, or just some app should be developed to get WM Streams working, or $$ issue?

Win media streams came back with "Could not play media, corrupted playlist" or something similar.Yes, I was getting that "Unable to open. Playlist corrupted." message and also "Unable to open. Media clip corrupted." and some reports of "File format not supported". The vast majority failed.

But a couple actually worked.... Kool 97.1 FM Jamaica (Win Media 64k); WHCN The River HD2 105.9FM (Win Media 32k). So it may depend on the exact Win format/codec they use.

Interesting...If I would have some ability beyond make bubbles with chewgum, I would research and solve that...

All of the Windows Media streams I've tested on vtuner work with mplayer, but I had to point it directly at the streams.

Maybe someone could write a little helper app to get the proper address to mplayer.

Some charitative soul, maybe.;) It would be very useful due most sports, talk and news radio and tv around the world are using the win media as stream format, as you can see easily on the vtuner list, whatever the country you pick.

As far as I know, the problem is that the file extension has to be asf, if I remember correctly.

Boy was I wrong. Media player gives me the file format error for all of the TVersity "restreams". It streams my music and movies well though. Not that that helps with the Win Media streaming....

akd, you CAN listen to WinMedia streams with OS2007 as I mentioned when you asked about it (http://www.internettablettalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11224) before receiving your n800.

Hi everybody...I am waiting for my N800 to arrive :D..but have my first, dumb question: Is there any application (finished or under construction) that can allow to listen internet radio streams based on WM? Because I understand that right out of the box, such listening isnīt possible, just real audio and mp3 based radios. Thanks in advance.
You will need to install MPlayer (http://mplayer.garage.maemo.org/)and the enhanced GUI front end KMPlayer (http://garage.maemo.org/projects/kmplayer/).
Then you can - bitrate/n800 cpu permitting - play windows radio and tv stations e.g.:
radio -BBC Word Service:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/me...fent_au_nb.asx (http://www.bbc.co.uk/worldservice/meta/tx/nb/live_infent_au_nb.asx)

tv - Canal 13 out of Chile:
mms://streaming.entelchile.net/canal13

Just paste the above URLs into KMPlayer. You can find more stations listed at sites such as:
radio:
http://surfmusic.de/
tv:
http://wwitv.com/portal.htm

The tricky part is obtaining the actual stream address (e.g. mms:....)

You need to right-click on their listed stream link [then "Details" or "Copy link location"] to obtain the actual stream address[with http://wwitv.com/portal.htm you can do this from the actual country list - with http://surfmusic.de/ you need to click on the "Listen Live" link first - with http://www.vtuner.com you'll probably need to go to the "Go To Website" link to dig it out as their "Play" is an 'asp' link that does not let you see the actual stream address]

So initially there is a bit of work involved but once you have the stream address you can add it to KMPlayer's xml based playlist.

I am hoping that with OS2008 this process will become easier.

The higher bitrate stations will be more like slideshows or not play at all. Not quite certain where the sweet point is - perhaps below 250K. The quality of your broadband connection is one restraint, the other is the n8x0's cpu. Nevertheless I have found quite a few tv and radio stations around the world and am having a lot of fun with KMPlayer[more info (http://kmplayer.garage.maemo.org/)].

Hope you get it to work, akd.!

PS:
- KMPlayer can play video & audio using the osso-media-server, MPlayer, Flash & SMIL[just select them from 'Player' on the menu]
- from KMPlayer release notes on how to launch a channel:
double click on the tree view is broken in bora, select an item and press the 'select' key instead

Thanks again for the technique, but actually never worked for me...maybe I was doing something wrong trying to catch the stream address...nice will be if ITOS2008 could do this task easier.

Yes, obtaining streams can be tricky. Also they are likely to change over time.
Personally I would love a program for our NITs, switching intelligently between MPlayer & default Media Player, similar to these free Windows Programs:
[streams are 'commented on/kept up to date' by the community]
tv: JLC's Internet TV (http://jlc-software.com/index.php?page=internet_tv.html)
tv/radio/etc: anyTV (http://anytvplayer.com/)

PS:
- With JLC's Internet TV & anyTV you can right-click on a channel and then click "Update channel" to find the underlying stream url that you can then input into KMPlayer (http://kmplayer.garage.maemo.org/)]
