View Full Version : Tap-n-hold wierdness ???

I use the tap-n-hold context menus a lot on my n800. Maybe it's just me, but I think OS2008 has an ugly little bug that effects tap-n-hold. Here is the senario:

If you tap-n-hold on an item and the context menu is drawn such that a portion of it is rendered under stylus, then the menu will stay on the screen when the stylus is lifted. (The normal, correct behaviour)

If you tap-n-hold on an imtem and the context menu is drawn such that a no portion is rendered under the stylus, then the context menu will dissapear when the stylus is lifted. (Incorrect behaviour)

The workaround is to move the stylus onto a portion of the context menu before lifting it each time. Ugg...

I have no idea if it's a theme issue, GTK issue, Hildon issue, etc, but it's driving me nuts!

Is anyone else seeing this? I've re-calibrated my screen about fifty times. Hehe.. I think it's time for a drink.

Yes I'm seeing this exactly as you describe - it needs a bug opening for it.

Likewise. Did this get opened? I don't see it in bugzilla.. I will search more and open if no one else has.

Um. OS2008 isn't officially out right? You guys might not even be running the latest version.

Um. OS2008 isn't officially out right? You guys might not even be running the latest version.

The determination on this issue in #maemo was that the bug report should be submitted anyway. A. There was a general feeling of frustration with non-bug reporting due to user's believing devs already knew about it or had fixed it since it was a development version and B. At the very least it would act as a marker for fixed bugs.

So, report your N800 OS2008 bugs!

What I know this is a known bug for OS2008 development team. It should be fixed on OS2008 December release.

Mara - so this isn't a bug in OS2008 on N810, only on N800?

Mara - so this isn't a bug in OS2008 on N810, only on N800?

My understanding is that it is OS2008 issue affecting both N800 and N810. (Someone with N810, please confirm?)

I just tested this on latest beta build and the problem is still there. (Also, in the latest version on Xterm there seem to be no pop up menu at all!!!)

As said, the workaround is to move stylus ever so slightly towards the menu before releasing it.

It may not be a bad idea to report this bug in Bugzilla... just to make sure Nokia will get detailed feedback what is the problem exactly.

As far as I've heard, there will be an update to OS2008 released for the N810 in December. It is with that update that we will get the N800 official version.

I went ahead and raised bug #2333 (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2333) - it may be N800 only and it may be being tracked internally and due for a fix in December but at least this way it won't be forgotten. :)

Accoring to the bug listing this has been "fixed" in a more current release. Can anyone with access to the latest beta confirm??

To answer an earlier question, this is very definitely an issue with the N810. I've experienced it, but not often enough to establish what caused it (if it happens I just reopen and make sure I don't lift till over the menu)...

Well I'm pretty sure I've read that the N810 has a firmware update coming around the same time the official OS2008 for N800 is released. So I'm guessing this wouldn't be fixed in the firmware that shipped with the N810s out there already. It would just be fixed in the beta releases that people like Mara have access to. I think..:)

Well according to the bug (https://bugs.maemo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2333#c5), it appears to be a problem with the way the applications have implemented the context sensitive menu (CSM) - one can only hope that the application owners have been notified of the problem and will amend their applications accordingly for the next release.

What I find interesting (or maybe that should be disturbing) is that a Nokian offers an explanation of the problem in bugzilla, but doesn't suggest if or when the problem will be fixed, or even give an indication that the relevant application owners will be notified... so I fully expect this problem not to be fixed in the official release.

I have this problem, also. I assume the only people who are noticing are those of us who made use of it, previously. If you never used it, you wouldn't notice, of course.

I hope it's addressed sooner rather than later.
